5 to Try: Fall Beers

The temperature is finally dropping, the leaves are changing colors, and it really is looking and feeling like fall outside. Stepping into your local beer store is no different. The bright summer labels are fully fading out and the shelves are stocked with the darker liquid of stouts, porters, and all the other delicious fall beer styles.

To help with the transition we’ve assembled a list of some delicious fall beers, new and returning, that are worth picking up on your next trip to the store.

Dogfish Head Suddenly Comfy

Style: Imperial Cream Ale          ABV: 8%

Dogfish Head never fails to invent unique and delicious beers. Suddenly Comfy is no different. This imperial cream ale is perfect for the fall and Thanksgiving time because the brewery uses apple cider as a base ingredient to give the beer a tart and fruity sweetness, which is then built on with Saigon cinnamon and Madagascar vanilla beans. The aroma and taste of this beer will give you an alcohol-infused version of apple pie, and it’s a must-try.

Heavy Seas Night Swell

Style: Dark IPA     ABV: 7.5%

Dark IPAs are not a common beer style, which makes Night Swell something worth checking out. Heavy Seas has put together a brew that offers hoppy IPA aromas that combine with rich and sweet malt flavors. The end result is a beer that delivers a full-bodied IPA that is full of flavor that might seem unusual, but delivers a unique and tasty beer. Night Swell has flavors of bittersweet chocolate as well as hop flavors that bring out unusual characteristics in the beer’s profile.

Guinness Over The Moon

Style: Milk Stout      ABV: 5.3%

When Guinness made the decision to move into Baltimore with their Open Gate Brewery, a big part of the plan was to launch beers created by their stateside team. Over The Moon is one of those beers and has impressed since the release a short while ago. Over The Moon is a sessionable milk stout that blends flavors of vanilla, caramel, chocolate, and coffee for a smooth and rich profile. This beer is straightforward, but can quickly become a go-to option.

Firestone Walker Coconut Merlin

Style: Milk Stout     ABV: 5.5%

Coconut Merlin is a returning brew from Firestone Walker that is incredibly smooth. The milk stout base of this beer gives it a light and creamy body that is easy-drinking, but the flavors are what make it a seasonal favorite. Packed with tons of chocolate and coconut, Coconut Merlin is bursting with tasty flavors that blend well for a unique stout offering. Everything combines to give Coconut Merlin a roasty finish and at only 5.5%, it’s very crushable.

UFO Winter Blonde

Style: Blonde Ale    ABV: 4.9%

An extremely unique beer, UFO’s Winter Blonde builds off of a light hefeweizen base and adds in the flavors of vanilla and coffee. This blonde ale is a lighter fall beer option for anyone who enjoys the flavors that come with the season, but might want something different from the usual darker styles. The vanilla and coffee flavor combination makes Winter Blonde a light, delicious drink that tastes like a sweet creamy coffee topped with the traditional banana aroma from the hefeweizen base.
