Evil Genius Fly Like An Eagle

It’s been six months since the Eagles won Super Bowl LII and the city has finally come back down to earth. YEAH RIGHT! Philadelphia continues to nurse its postgame hangover and how about all those newborn babies named Carson and Nick? No wonder Evil Genius rereleased their Eagles-inspired, “wooder ice” IPA: Fly Like An Eagle.

First brewed in January of 2018, label artist Shane Coslett remembers when he was first contacted by Evil Genius founders Trevor Hayward and Luke Bowen about the beer. “Right before the Super Bowl, they hit me up to design a label for this ‘wooder ice’ beer called Fly Like An Eagle,” says Coslett. “It was one big celebration of the team and the season they’d been having. But after they won, we decided to keep the celebration going and rerelease it.”

A 6.2% ABV, New England-style IPA brewed with lactose and vanilla, Fly Like An Eagle pays tribute to our beloved Eagles and “wooder ice” (or water ice, for the uninitiated), the street snack staple of Philadelphia. Designed to be a “hazy, dank, fuzzed-out brew”, the good people at Evil Genius decided to add another layer to this beer, so the brewers tossed a hefty amount of mango purée into the fermenter to give Fly Like An Eagle its distinct mango flavor.

In designing the artwork to go along with this unmistakably Philly beer, Coslett made sure the city’s grit was depicted on the label. “Graffiti culture is something I respect, so you can see some influences in the design.” And the artwork just wouldn’t have been complete without Coslett’s green eagle, sporting a jersey, flying with a cold one. It’s beer artwork that screams Evil Genius, Eagles and Philly all at once. “It’s awesome to be a part of what the guys at Evil Genius are doing,” says Coslett. “And when you see people lining up around the block to get the beer, it all sort of hits you. It’s something I love to do.” Go birds!
